Who Can Benefit from Orthotics?

Orthotics are specialized shoe inserts that can reduce foot and ankle pain, improve your overall spinal alignment, and even help treat specific health conditions. While you may have had over-the-counter orthotics before, custom orthotics are safer and more effective.

At Premier Health Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Carrollton, Texas, Dr. H. Khayal uses computer technology to mold your orthotics to perfectly match your foot. Find out whether our custom-made orthotics can help with your condition.

How do orthotics work?

Orthotics are custom-molded shoe inserts that perfectly support the arches, heels, and soles of your feet.

Normally, orthotics provide extra support to your feet and ensure they’re in a neutral position when you walk. This can in turn reduce excess strain on surrounding joints and muscles, which might be causing painful conditions such as plantar fasciitis, back pain, or heel spurs.

What conditions can orthotics treat?

Because your body is made up of interconnected joints, misalignment in your feet can cause pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and even back. That’s why orthotics can help people with the following conditions and more.

Arch problems

High arches and low arches can both lead to foot pain and discomfort. Normally, your arch works to transfer weight and impact evenly across your foot.

If your arches are too low (also known as flat feet), it can cause you to roll your foot in and put stress on your sensitive ankle joints. On the other hand, if you have high arches, it can stress surrounding muscles and cause shin splints, knee pain, and other conditions.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is caused by inflammation in the fibrous tissue underneath your foot that connects your heel to your toes. Orthotics can help reduce pressure on this area, allowing the inflammation to decrease.

Injuries

After an injury due to a sports accident or overuse, your feet might need extra support during their recovery. While a cast is appropriate for initially immobilizing a healing joint, orthotics can help stabilize a joint after it’s healed but still recovering its strength.

Heel spurs, bunions, and other deformities

If you’ve developed a common foot deformity like a bunion on the side of your big toe or a heel spur on the base of your heel, accommodative orthotics can help prevent your shoe rubbing on these areas and causing more irritation and pain.

While orthotics can’t treat these growths, they can help minimize your discomfort.

Low back pain

You might be surprised to learn that a lot of low back pain starts in your feet and with your posture. During a back pain assessment, Dr. Khayal checks your posture and walking position to determine whether your feet might be causing misalignments in your spine.

Orthotics can help you maintain a healthy posture and walking position, which in turn can reduce your back pain.

If you’re not sure about custom-made orthotics, speak with Dr. Khayal to find out whether they can help you with your condition. Your feet are the foundation for your body’s health, which is why they deserve dedicated care and support in the form of orthotic inserts.
