What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is able to self-regulate and self-heal. Your brain, spinal cord, and all of your nerves are able to control your body’s self-regulating functions.

Your skull is vital for protecting your brain and the moving bones of the spine protect the spinal cord and nerve roots that communicate from your brain to the rest of your body. If your nervous system is impaired, it can cause your tissues and organs to malfunction. Doctors generally call this condition the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Vertebral, referring to all of the bones of the spine. Subluxation, meaning a partial dislocation. And finally Complex, meaning that it is affecting several parts.

Chiropractic is the science of discovering where your spinal structures are malfunctioning and reducing those malfunctions’ impact to your entire nervous system. When your nervous system is working properly, your body is better able to recover.

What education do chiropractors have?

Doctors of Chiropractic need to be well educated. Chiropractic sciences need an emphasis on physiology, anatomy, neurology, pathology, biomechanics, X-rays, spinal adjusting techniques, and other related subjects. This extensive curriculum ensures that chiropractic doctors understand how to locate the Vertebral Subluxation Complex and help correct dysfunctions within the nervous system.

In order to graduate with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, each candidate must pass rigorous National Board Examinations. In order to be able to practice, the doctors must first apply to a governmental or professional licensing board and pass a more challenging test. Even so, a chiropractor is never done learning, they must regularly complete postgraduate instruction in order to renew their license and stay up to date with the latest scientific discoveries.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Unlike other forms of care that require invasive procedures or addictive drugs, chiropractic has a holistic approach to health that is remarkably safe. We build your course of care around your body and your nervous systems. It s a natural approach to health that is proven to be safe and effective.

Do I have a slipped disc?

A “slipped disc” is not an accurate term to describe what is happening within your spine. Your disc is located in between your vertebrae and is a connector and “shock absorber” for your spin. It has a jelly-like center that is contained by stronger tissue. Your discs are necessary for proper turning and bending. They do not “slip” however, they can bulge, herniate, or even rupture. This is extremely painful as it puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. Chiropractic care has been shown to help relieve disc related problems without the need of surgery or dependency on pain pills.

Can I adjust myself?

No. Chiropractic is a very precise art. It is a specific level of force, applied in an exact direction on a particular spinal joint. You cannot adjust yourself to the level of accuracy that is required.

When you turn or bend yourself in a way to create a “popping” sound, you may think that you are adjusting yourself, but you may actually be worsening your condition. You may be take an unstable area of your spine even more unsteady. In order for your spine to be properly adjusted, it must be done by a doctor of chiropractic.

Why do children need chiropractic care?

Spinal trauma can occur during birth, which is why many parents have a chiropractic doctor assess their newborns for a Vertebral Subluxation Complex

Other important parts of growing up such as learning to walk, riding a bicycle, and other activities can lead to spinal misalignments. These issues can only be repaired through the help of a chiropractic doctor. Many childhood issues are ignored or called “growing pains” but are often caused by the spine. Chiropractic check ups can identify where these issues lie and can help avoid problems that can worsen in the future.

Will my pain go away for good?

We cannot guarantee the results of any of our treatments as every patient is different. However, most patients do feel long term relief of their pain when they do complete their plan of care. Doing exercise at home as well as coming to us for periodic visits will help you maintain your spinal health. It will also prevent the injury from recurring.

How does chiropractic work?

Chiropractic restores your body’s innate ability to be and stay healthy. Once your body has a properly functioning nervous system, every part of your body is designed to resist disease and other health problems. Chiropractic helps you achieve better health by understanding and removing interferences that prevent you from being healthy.

The loss of normal motion or incorrect position of the spinal column can be a common interference to your nervous system. When the bones are misaligned, they can irritate or impair the nervous system’s proper functioning. When your nervous system is not functioning the way that it should, it can disrupt the transmission of nerve impulses.

Once your spine is properly aligned, you will likely see improvements in your nervous system function. Your chiropractic doctor will remove nervous system interferences that may be impairing your normal health. Chiropractic care has a positive effect on your body as a whole, not simply just health conditions usually referred to as “back problems”.

What do chiropractic doctors do?

In order for chiropractic doctors to begin strengthen spinal biomechanics and improve the function of your nervous system, they need to review your case history. This way, they will understand your health background and any surgeries, accidents, other details that are affecting your health.

Once they have a strong understanding of your history, they can discuss your specific problem with you. They will also do a thorough orthopedic, neurological and chiropractic examination, this will include X-rays to uncover structural or functional problems with the spinal column. This examination will help the chiropractic doctor discover where your spine and nervous system is malfunctioning and how that is affecting your body.

After your chiropractic doctor has finished your examinations, he will be able to create a plan of chiropractic adjustments. He will then monitor your progress through regular examinations and other important follow-ups.

What is an adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment applies a particular level of force in a exact direction to a joint that is not moving the way that it should or “locked up. This force can improve the range of motion to the joint, assisting the bones to gradually return to their proper position and their correct motion. The result of this adjustment is improved spinal and nervous system function, enhancing your overall health and wellness.

Chiropractic is an accurate and precise art, using their hands or a specially-designed instrument to produce the brief thrust. There are other types of adjusting that may need slow and constant pressure. The chiropractic doctor must be trained for years in order to understand which method of adjusting is best for proper alignment.

Are all patients adjusted the same way?

No, since every patient has a unique spinal problem, each one will need to have a course of care developed around their needs. Your chiropractic doctor will evaluate your history and examine your body to understand the right way to adjust your body.

Once their care schedule has been developed, they will begin to see that their care is delivered with precision and confidence. Each visit works with the previous visits for the best results. Every patient’s care schedule is different.

Can decompression therapy ease my pain?

There is no guarantee when it comes to any type of treatment, however, many clinical studies have shown that chiropractic treatments have been effective in a high percentage of patients. Most back problems are caused by damaged disks and lack of spinal muscle control. Chiropractic decompression treatment focuses on the underlying problems and releases the pressure on the disc. Decompression has been shown to increase blood and nutrient exchange which can repair the damaged disc from the inside out.

Will decompression therapy treatments hurt? Is it safe?

Decompression therapy is very comfortable and gentle. In fact, many patients even fall asleep during treatments. Your chiropractic doctor will use equipment that has been proven to be safe and effective. Most patients feel a mild stretch on their back and hips.
